The U.S. State Department has voiced strong opposition to the reported intentions of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to advance the legalization of settler outposts in the West Bank, labeling such actions as “dangerous and reckless.” According to sources cited by the Times of Israel, Smotrich aims to initiate the process of legalizing 68 unauthorized outposts in the region, a move described as one of the most significant expansions for the settlement movement in decades.

In response to these reports, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel conveyed the U.S. government’s stance during a routine briefing, emphasizing the perceived risks associated with supporting illegal outposts in the West Bank. Patel reiterated Washington’s long-standing opposition to the establishment of Israeli settlements in the region, asserting that such endeavors contravene international law. He further affirmed that the U.S. would continue to advocate for Israeli officials to refrain from allocating resources to outposts deemed unlawful under Israeli legislation.

Israel’s settlement activities in the West Bank, which it regards as historically significant and integral to its security, have been a source of contention in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration has actively promoted the expansion of settlements, a policy that has drawn criticism from the United States.

The proliferation of Israeli settlements has resulted in the appropriation of land in the West Bank, impeding Palestinian aspirations for the establishment of an independent state encompassing the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem as its capital.

Recent developments have also raised concerns regarding potential military operations in the Rafah area of the Gaza Strip. Patel indicated that Washington’s apprehensions regarding such actions have not been fully addressed, emphasizing the need for a credible and comprehensive plan should military operations be pursued.

Despite international warnings of potential humanitarian repercussions, Israeli military officials have reportedly expressed readiness to evacuate Palestinian civilians from Rafah and engage with Hamas militants in the southern Gaza Strip city.
