French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Thursday that Europe should be prepared for potential conflict in order to secure peace, characterizing Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, as an adversary whose ambitions extend beyond Ukraine. Macron’s remarks came amidst ongoing tensions in the region, with the conflict between Kyiv’s forces and Russian-backed separatists persisting for two years.
Macron’s recent comments have stirred controversy, particularly his suggestion last month that the deployment of ground troops in Ukraine could not be ruled out in the future. While some leaders distanced themselves from this stance, others, particularly in Eastern Europe, expressed support.
In a televised interview primarily aimed at a domestic audience, Macron reiterated his concerns, stating that if Russia were to emerge victorious in the conflict, it would severely undermine Europe’s credibility. He emphasized that the stakes for European security were high in the Ukrainian crisis, warning against perceived weakness in the face of Russian aggression.
Refusing to outline specific details regarding a potential deployment to Ukraine, Macron emphasized the need for Russia to cease hostilities and seek a peaceful resolution. He stated that granting visibility to the Kremlin without reciprocation was unwarranted.
Macron clarified that France has no intention of initiating hostilities against Russia and emphasized that despite aggressive actions targeting French interests, Paris does not consider itself at war with Moscow. He described the Kremlin regime as an adversary but refrained from labeling Russia as an enemy.
Addressing concerns over nuclear threats made by Putin, Macron deemed such rhetoric inappropriate. He stressed the importance of providing stronger support to Ukraine in its ongoing struggle.
Macron expressed hope for future negotiations for peace with Russia, acknowledging the possibility of a different leadership in Moscow. Despite alleged security concerns raised by Russia regarding his planned visit to Ukraine, Macron affirmed that the trip had not been cancelled, dismissing Russia’s claims.
